Your CV - if you have a CV by all means say so to home owners and on your website. If there is anything you can say in it that would be relevant to house sitting you should include it.

If you have any kind of qualification or experience as a plumber, electrician, decorator, roofer, landscaper, etc. – put it on your website, in your application, in your CV and in your profiles on house sitting websites.

Also include any school qualifications if they’re good and qualifications such as ocean sailing or heavy goods vehicle licenses, they all show you’re capable and there’s a hint of trustworthiness in there too.

There are a number of things you would be very wise to make sure you have completed before accepting a house sitting job and whilst you are carrying it out and everything we list here is important if you are serious about proving to home owners that you’re a house sitting expert, so that you get repeat business!

These safeguards will stand you in good stead for every house sitting job you take on:

a)   Make sure you’ve looked at the location to determine if it’s OK for you.

b)   Make sure you’ve calculated the cost of getting to the job and back.

c)   Make sure you’ve researched any work the owner wants you to do that you are not experienced in.

It’s only in the extreme minority of cases that this is necessary, usually home owners stick to what they say and you will become friends and think that a contract was never needed in the first place, you just have to watch out for the odd one or two who are not going to play fair.

This is why it’s worth asking the home owner if they have a contract already prepared, though most will say they’re not bothered. To this you can say ‘well let’s agree everything to do with the job on email then’ and once the emails between you both have confirmed everything to do with the job you have something to fall back on.
