As a house sitter you will also be a caretaker, a caretaker looks after building maintenance to ensure nothing goes wrong with things like plumbing, electrics, roof leaks and so on and would make arrangements to have them fixed, or if they were serious enough inform their employer to see what course of action to take.
Caretaking also involves security in terms of being a presence on site at all times. In situations where a breach of security is more than likely at some stage professional security firms would be employed though. The caretaker acts as more of a deterrent through their presence.
In all of these respects house sitting and caretaking are exactly the same, but if you’re considering becoming a caretaker or you’re already in caretaking don’t ignore the many benefits that house sitting can give you.
